Job Summary:
Provides support to the attorneys and activities of Legal Aid of Nebraska along with a positive educational experience. Support shall include but not be limited to:
Conducting legal research, writing briefs and memoranda, interviewing clients and witnesses, responding to client inquiries, drafting and filing pleadings with courts, preparing correspondence, compiling data and assisting in preparation of cases.
Essential Functions:
• Conducts legal research using legal research tools and prepares memos and/or briefs on the results of the research.
• Prepares summaries of and commentary on proposed legislation.
• Provides litigation assistance to the attorneys.
• Interviews clients and witnesses to obtain necessary case-specific information.
• Relays the legal facts and advice given by an attorney to the client, following up with written materials.
• Accompanies attorneys and provides support during regular business hours at Legal Aid of Nebraska.
• Works with staff to coordinate and perform appropriate case follow up.
• Communicates either orally or in writing with management, members of the firm, partners in statewide network, clients and the public.
• Applies computer skills and data entry using firm systems such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PIKA.
• Drafts legal documents and correspondence.
• Maintains general office support.
• Assists in implementing Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Mission Statement, goals and priorities, including helping clients to become self-sufficient.
• Complies with Legal Aid of Nebraska’s policies, procedures
• Complies with all LSC Regulations and record keeping in the handling of cases in which they provide litigation support.
• If certified as a Senior Law Student and under the supervision of a Legal Aid of Nebraska Attorney, may appear in court and represent LAN clients in a variety of civil legal matters.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:Required Education and Experience
Required Education: Currently enrolled in Law school , at least one year of law school preferred.
Required Licenses: None, but the law clerk should apply for certification as a Senior Law Student as defines by the Nebraska Supreme Court as soon as they are eligible
