Job Summary Help play an important role in the health of Minnesotan youth. The Social Epidemiology and Translation Unit of the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease (HPCD) division at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking a Research Scientist 3 to be a Youth Substance Use Researcher.
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Conduct research, evaluation, and statistical analysis on various methods and sources of youth substance use-related data in Minnesota.
- Review, synthesize, and translate research and data to increase understanding of youth substance use and its intersections with mental health, academic, and social outcomes.
- Participate in grant writing and applications.
Work may be conducted in-person in St. Paul, or as telework for applicants who reside in MN, IA, WI, ND, or SD, based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion. Position location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of the closest MDH office location: Bemidji, Duluth, Fergus Falls, Marshall, Rochester, St. Cloud, or St. Paul. Attendance to in person quarterly meetings in St. Paul is required and there will be additional periodic requirements in office based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications To facilitate proper crediting, please ensure your resume/application clearly describe your experience in the areas listed below and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of the minimum qualifications will be considered for this position.
Four (4) years professional experience in health-related research design and methodology. Experience must include all of the following:
- Conducting analyses in an analytical, evaluative, or research program.
- Data collection and analysis, data quality assurance and cleaning.
- Interpretation of research data, program outcome and evaluation data.
Knowledge, ability and skills to be assessed during the interview:
- Knowledge of public health principles and youth substance use.
- Ability to identify and evaluate relevant information to make recommendations and create comprehensive reports, manuscripts, and grant applications.
- Knowledge of literature review and meta-analysis methodologies.
A degree in public health, epidemiology, environmental health, psychology, sociology, biostatistics, or related field may count towards professional experience as follows:
- Bachelor's = 12 months
- Master's = 18 months
- Doctoral = 24 months
Preferred Qualifications - Experience with youth substance use, risk and protective factors of use, and potential harms.
- Experience with high level database analysis and use of statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, Stata or R.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Excel or Tableau.
- Experience using appropriate methodology to answer complex research questions.
- Knowledge of MDH authority and responsibilities for collecting, protecting, analyzing, and disseminating data.
Additional Requirements - Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
- This employment does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand occasional travel, which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
- The successful candidate under U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services regulations must be able to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins. The agency is unable to offer H-1B sponsorship.
